AI video tools for photographers

What holds up in client work and what does not.

Hotels and brands ask for short video with the photographs. That is where these tools meet real work.

Two different jobs sit here. Making motion from a still, and improving footage you actually filmed.

Tool by tool

Runway

The broadest toolset: generate, edit, extend and clean up video in one place.

Listed with a free tier of 125 credits and paid plans from 12 US dollars a month billed annually.

Credits disappear quickly at higher resolutions, so price a job by the clips you will deliver.

Kling

Image to video with convincing motion, which is the part most models still get wrong.

Best on a subject that should move slightly: fabric, water, hair, steam.

Luma Dream Machine

Quick clips from a still, with a simple interface and a free tier.

Good for testing whether a still has any motion in it worth selling to a client.

Topaz Video

This one improves footage you actually filmed rather than generating new frames.

Upscaling old client footage to a current delivery spec is a real, uncontroversial use.

Listed from 19 US dollars a month for the video plan at the time of checking.

Higgsfield

Camera moves applied to a still image: a push, a pan, a slow orbit.

A restrained push on a hotel interior reads as a considered edit. Anything faster reads as a trick.

Two different jobs

The first is generating motion from a still, which is what most of these tools sell.

The second is improving footage you filmed, which is less exciting and more useful.

A hotel client is delighted by the second and suspicious of the first.

Price them differently, because the risk is different.

What holds up in client work

A slow push or a gentle parallax on a still. It reads as an edit, not as a trick.

Detail shots where nothing has to stay consistent for long.

Upscaled real footage, which nobody ever questions.

Generated people do not hold up. One morphing frame destroys a whole clip.

Practical limits to plan around

Clips are short, so an edit needs many of them.

Colour and light drift between generations, which shows when two clips sit together.

Credits run out fast at high resolution.

Vertical and horizontal need to be decided before the shoot, because recropping loses quality.

What works for a hotel or a brand

A slow push on a still works. It reads as a considered edit rather than a trick.

Generated people do not work. A face that morphs for one frame destroys the whole clip.

Upscaling real footage works, and nobody ever asks about it.

Mariya's verdict. I film the movement I need. Generated motion is for the gap when a client wants one more clip and the location is closed.

The practical limits

Clips are short. Most tools give a few seconds, so an edit needs many of them.

Consistency across clips is the hard part. Light and colour drift between generations.

Credits run out fast at high resolution. Price a job by clips delivered, not by minutes.

What a hotel should ask for in a brief

How many finished clips, at what length, and in which aspect ratios.

Whether any clip contains generated motion, and a note in the contract if it does.

Who holds the usage rights, and for how long.

Whether staff or guests appear, because that needs consent whatever the tool.

And which platform the clips are for, because a vertical cut needs headroom that a horizontal frame does not have.

Agree that before the shoot day. Reframing a finished clip loses quality every time.

For a two-night residency I plan the video at the same time as the stills, so the same light serves both.

A worked example

A two-night hotel residency produces stills plus six short clips for social.

Four clips are filmed properly: a walk into the suite, the pool at dusk, the bar being set, a detail of the linen.

Two are made from stills with a slow push, because the spa was closed on both days.

The two generated moves are labelled in the delivery note and priced differently from the filmed clips.

The hotel uses all six. The difference is that nobody was misled about which was which.

Where these facts came from

Every price and feature on this page was read from the vendor's own website on 25 September 2026.

Plans change often, and a tool that was a one-off purchase last year may be a subscription now.

Check the current page before you buy, and treat the figures here as a starting point for comparison rather than a quote.

Nothing on this page is sponsored. No vendor paid for a place in the tables, and there are no affiliate links.

Who wrote this and how it is kept current

This page is written by Mariya Harley, a fashion, portrait and hotel photographer working from a studio in west London.

The tools described here are the ones that reach a working photographer's desk, and the failures described are the ones that reach a client's screen.

Prices and features are read from vendor pages rather than repeated from other articles. The date of that check is printed above each table.

Nothing here is sponsored, and there are no affiliate links. A tool appears because it does the job, or because people ask about it.

What is deliberately absent: benchmark scores copied from press releases, rankings that change with the season, and any claim that software can replace direction, light or responsibility for the result.

If a price here is out of date, the vendor page wins. Tell me and I will correct it.
