What to wear for a night photoshoot

What works for a night shoot specifically

Colour. Decided by whatever light you stand in, so it matters less than usual. What matters is value: mid to dark tones hold shape against a dark background, and pure white under flash blows out before the face is correctly exposed.

Fabric. Anything with a specular quality — leather, satin, sequin, patent — catches flash and gives the frame a focal point. Matte fabric absorbs it and disappears.

Footwear. Whatever survives a night out, since the frames worth having happen at the end of it rather than the start.

The thing that ruins frames. Head-to-toe matte black outdoors at night. Without a rim of light or a reflective detail there is no separation from the background and you photograph as a silhouette.

Two rules that hold everywhere

• Steam it the night before — creases are the most expensive thing in any retouching bill and the cheapest to prevent.
• Bring options and decide on set, where you can see the light and the background rather than guessing at home.
