What works for a prom shoot specifically

Colour. Already decided, so the photography decision is the background: dark suits and pale dresses in the same frame under bright sun is the hardest exposure problem of the evening, and moving everyone into open shade solves it entirely.

Fabric. Satin and sequin catch late-afternoon sun hard. Shooting in shade keeps the detail in the dress instead of blowing it to white.

Footwear. Worn in before the day. Lawns, gravel and new heels produce a visible wobble in every full-length frame.

The thing that ruins frames. Corsages and buttonholes pinned in the last thirty seconds, crooked, in every photograph. Fix them before the camera comes out.

Two rules that hold everywhere

• Steam it the night before — creases are the most expensive thing in any retouching bill and the cheapest to prevent.
• Bring options and decide on set, where you can see the light and the background rather than guessing at home.
