In short: Newborn photography has a biological deadline. Under about fourteen days a baby still curls into the shapes people associate with the genre; after three weeks it becomes a different session entirely, and a better one in some ways.

Parents in the first two weeks, when a baby still curls and sleeps through almost anything — and after that, when they do not.

1. On a plain bed, window light

No props, no basket, one blanket. It ages better than any styled setup and it takes no equipment.

2. In a parent's hands

Scale is the whole story — a hand next to a foot says more about how small they are than any full-length frame.

3. Detail frames

Fingers, toes, the back of the neck, the swirl of hair. Five minutes and they become the most-printed images of the set.

4. Feeding, honestly

Documentary rather than staged. It is what the first weeks actually consist of.

5. With siblings, briefly

Best done first and fast, with the older child seated and supported. Expect two usable frames and be pleased with them.

6. Parents, holding, faces down

Parents rarely appear in newborn galleries and always want to.

7. Awake and unimpressed

The wide-eyed frames are as valuable as the sleeping ones and much easier after three weeks.

8. The room as it is

Cot, muslins, chaos. In ten years the mess is the memory.

Where to shoot it

Home, in the room with the biggest window, on the floor or a bed pushed towards it. Heat the room several degrees above comfortable for adults. Turn every artificial light off; mixed light is the reason so many home newborn photographs are orange.

Choosing a location, in order

  1. Meaning first. Somewhere you actually go beats somewhere photogenic you have never been — it shows in how you stand.
  2. Light second. Open shade or low sun; never overhead midday light on faces.
  3. Logistics third. Two locations within a short walk is realistic in two hours; three means the travel eats the session.
  4. Permissions. Most London parks are fine for a small personal shoot; commercial work in managed estates and some royal parks needs a permit — ask before planning around one.

The mistakes that cost the most

Booking too late and expecting the curled poses. Shooting under ceiling lights. Attempting propped poses seen online, which are composites. And scheduling only an hour — a newborn session runs on the baby's timetable and needs two to three.

More on newborn shoots

When should newborn photos be taken?

Ideally in the first two weeks for the curled sleeping frames. After three weeks the session shifts to awake, alert portraits, which are equally good but different.

Are those elaborate newborn poses safe?

The propped and hanging poses circulating online are composites — two or more frames merged, with hands supporting the baby in each. They should never be attempted as single shots.

How long does a newborn session take?

Two to three hours, because it runs on feeding and settling rather than on a schedule.
