What works for a baby shower shoot specifically

Colour. The guest of honour needs to separate from the styling. A pastel dress against a pastel table is the most common mistake at these events — pick a tone the room does not already contain.

Fabric. Fitted enough for the bump to read in the portrait set, comfortable enough to host in for four hours. Jersey and stretch crepe do both.

Footwear. Flat. Hosting while pregnant is standing for hours, and it is visible in the last hour of photographs.

The thing that ruins frames. A guest brief that is too prescriptive. Ask only that nobody wears the same bright colour as the backdrop and leave it there.

Two rules that hold everywhere

• Steam it the night before — creases are the most expensive thing in any retouching bill and the cheapest to prevent.
• Bring options and decide on set, where you can see the light and the background rather than guessing at home.
