Colour. Anything except pale neutrals, which disappear into sand and bright sky. Deep colours and strong tones hold against a blown-out coastal background.
Fabric. Loose and light — linen, cotton, chiffon. Wind is the beach's one free gift to photography and stiff fabric refuses it.
Footwear. Barefoot for the waterline frames, something for the walk back. Sand ruins leather.
The thing that ruins frames. Sheer white with the sun behind it, unless that is the intention. Backlight turns thin white fabric transparent and it is not recoverable in editing.
In the bag. A microfibre towel to sit on between frames, a plastic bag for the wet outfit, dry-shampoo or a comb for wind-blown hair, and a rocket blower — sand on a lens front element scratches it permanently. Nothing white and absorbent.
