Not necessarily film. What reads as “analogue” is a set of specific qualities: grain in the shadows, highlights that bloom rather than clip, colours that lean warm or green rather than sitting neutral, and focus that is not surgically perfect.
Both exist and the honest answer matters when you commission. Real film means a lab, a wait, and no chimping on the back of the camera — which changes the pace of the shoot. A digital file finished to a film response gives you the texture with the flexibility. Neither is fake; pretending one is the other is.
Grain hides what smoothing exposes. Heavy retouching creates the plastic quality audiences have learned to spot instantly; texture reads as skin. Between two portraits of the same person, the grainier one is almost always read as more attractive and more trustworthy.
On anything that has to be reproduced small. Grain at 200 pixels wide is noise, so it is the wrong finish for a LinkedIn photograph or a marketplace listing. Ask for a clean version of the key frames alongside the textured set.
