Posing has moved from “hold this” to “keep doing that”. Walking frames, a hand mid-gesture, hair still moving, an expression between two expressions. Documentary language applied to fashion and portraiture.
Because it removes the moment of being looked at. Almost everyone who describes themselves as unphotogenic photographs well the second they are doing something — the stiffness comes from holding still while being observed, not from their face. This is why movement-based direction has become the default for portrait sessions, not just editorial ones.
One anchor in focus. If the eyes are sharp and the hand trails, it reads as motion; if everything smears, it reads as a failure. Shutter speed does the work, and it is a deliberate choice on the day rather than something rescued later.
Give yourself a task: walk to a point and back, put a coat on, sit down mid-sentence. Photographers working in this register shoot in bursts through the action rather than resetting between frames, so expect more frames and fewer instructions.
You still need the clean, still frame — the one for a website header or an agency submission. Candid work sits on top of that, it does not remove the need for it.
